Vancouver parking is one thing that you won’t find a lot of.
Vancouver has a serious parking problem and its not getting any better.
As the secret gets out that Vancouver is the best place to visit and live the more people are moving here from other parts of Canada and other parts of the world this is also the part of the reason there is so much construction going on in the city as more apartment buildings (condos) are being built.
You can barely go anywhere in the city without seeing building cranes in the skyline. Parking in downtown Vancouver is an adventure in itself. Keep a pocket full of coins ready to feed the parking meters and privately owned parking lots.
The Vancouver Parking Authority has just started making it easier to pay by letting you put the meter fee onto your cellular phone in some locations around the city. (that was nice of them, wasn't it!)
Just a word to the wise, check the sign on the meter before you pay for it because some of the streets become "no parking" areas during morning and afternoon rush hour and even though you’ve paid for your parking you’ll still get a ticket and towed away!
Being in Vancouver with your rental car towed away is not a fun thing and doesn’t add to the adventure of visiting the city!
The Vancouver parking fines are pretty steep too. There are different fine costs for different infractions, and there are a lot of different rules for example:
Metered parking, Signed time restrictions, Residential parking zones, Delivery permits and other specialized permits, On-street permit parking for downtown employees, Meter Hoods for Construction and Events and there are more but I don’t want to worry you too much!
While in Vancouver, if you get a parking ticket the fine will vary from around $30 - $40 dollars and if you don’t pay it within 34 days, it will double! (In one area called the “Granville mall” area the fines start at $75.00! now that is madness!
Vancouver parking fees aren’t the only thing to worry about; there are the towing fees that start at $48 – 78 dollars. (they are even higher for vancouver airport parking fees).
So, Vancouver parking is best done by going to a car lot and reading the sign to ensure your rental car is safe before going on your adventure of seeing the sights of the city. Paying a few dollars now can save you paying close or over $100.00 later for the same parking spot.
Try asking your car rental company if they have any discount agreement with any private Vancouver parking.
