Vancouver Art Gallery
The Vancouver Art Gallery is in a grand building that used to be the old Vancouver (pronounced "vancoover") court house.
The gallery is a heritage stone building with columns whose entrance is guarded by lions on each side of the columns. Inside the gallery there’s two gift stores and restaurant and three floors of exhibits. The Vancouver Art Gallery houses a permanent collection of work by Emily Carr the world famous west coast artist. Emily Carr is known for her landscapes and First Nations totem poles paintings. The rest of the exhibits vary depending on who the art gallery is able to attract and some very good exhibits come here like Georgia O'Keefe and Andy Warhol. The Vancouver Art Gallery is more than an art gallery it's also a focal point and meeting place in the downtown core. If you go there at lunch time on a sunny day you'll see many people sitting on the steps of the art gallery enjoying their lunch...or lying on the grass in the front of the building with a book.
Many events go on the grounds all around the gallery. It’s not uncommon to see various groups giving performances for passers-by. One that I enjoy stopping to watch is when there’s a group out there doing caporeira the Afro-Brazilian martial art. The Vancouver Art Gallery is definitely worth an afternoon on your list of things to see in Vancouver and one you can enjoy no matter what the weather. One thing to consider though, there is no public parking at the gallery itself so you'll have to pay for parking at a one of the streets nearby. ...Return often for more exciting information on many more of Vancouver's best things to do, sights to see and local attractions.
