Valentine Day Chocolate

Valentines Day just wouldn't be Valentines Day without Valentine Day chocolate.

Chocolate for Valentines (and in my world any time) are a real hit and a romantic valentine gift idea.

For the ultimate chocolate lovers heaven go to the Sutton Place Hotel in downtown Vancouver for the all you can eat chocolate buffet. It's popular so make sure you call ahead for reservations.

If that sounds too sinful for you to partake in here are some chocolate recipes for you to create at home for your special valentine.

Chocolate Covered Popcorn

Microwave 3 bags of microwave popcorn and take out any that didn't pop.

In a sauce pan combine:

  - 1 cup of sugar

  - ½ cup milk

  - 3 tablespoons cocoa

  - ¼ teaspoon salt

Cook to a soft ball stage, mix 1 teaspoon vanilla and 1 tablespoon margarine. Stir into popcorn until dry.

Chocolate Covered Pretzels

  - 1 large package of chocolate chips

  - 1 tablespoon shortening

  - 1 large bag of pretzels

Melt chocolate chips, add shortening and stir until smooth. Dip pretzels into chocolate mixture. Put on cookie tray lined with wax paper. Put in freezer for 15 minutes. Enjoy!

Homemade Hot Cocoa

  - 1 cup milk

  - 2 tablespoons water

  - 2 tablespoons sugar

  - 1 tablespoon cocoa

  - splash of vanilla (if desired)

  - marshmallows (optional)

Combine cocoa, sugar and water in small saucepan. Heat on low and stir occasionally to prevent paste from sticking to the pan. After a minute add milk and vanilla. Mix it all together until it's hot enough for you.

As a bonus add a peppermint candy or two for a mint chocolate drink that will warm you from head to toe.

Hot Cocoa tastes especially good when you have it after your romantic walk along the seawall.
