The Lions
The Lions are one of the amazing natural attractions that you’ll find all over Vancouver (pronounced “Vancoover”) and the lower mainland. They are twin mountains peaks that stand guard over Lions Bay; a tiny community by the sea that’s a 30 minute drive from the city. To get to Lions Bay you travel a little ways along the sea to sky highway that goes to Whistler the home of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. The Lions are a grueling hike but the reward at the top is worth any pain you might feel getting there. What you’ll be treated to is a spectacular view of Howe Sound and little islands off in the distance. You should plan 4 hours for the hike but if you don’t want to go all the way up you can stop at one of the view points you’ll get to within the first two miles (3 kilometers). There’s the West Lion and the East Lion and the geologist believe they are what’s left of a volcanic cone. On the way up to the summit you’ll cross a creek with boulders in it. The boulders are popular place for people to stop and rest a bit and sunbathe but be careful not to litter or pollute the creek because it’s the water supply for the Lions Bay community. The best time to climb these mountains is during the late summer or early fall. The weather here in Vancouver is still good then and you’ll get a clearer view because the trees start to drop their leaves. ...Return often for more exciting information on many more of Vancouver's best things to do, sights to see and local attractions.
