Sylvia Hotel Vancouver, a Vancouver Landmark
Sylvia Hotel Vancouver is one of the long standing and sentimental favorite places to stay in Vancouver Year after year visitors returning to Vancouver come and stay here and even book the same room. This landmark hotel and heritage building was built in 1912 for a Mr. Goldstein who named the building after his daughter Sylvia. It used to be a Vancouver apartment rental building but it was converted into a hotel after the depression. Back in 1954 Sylvia Hotel hosted the first cocktail bar in Vancouver. Today it's still can't be beat as being one of the best spots in Vancouver to enjoy a cocktail served with an amazing sunset.
The hotel is located in a prime location directly across the street from English Bay where every year hundreds of thousand of people descend for the fireworks festival. Make sure you ask for a south facing room if you plan to be here then. Right next door is Vancouver's number one "must see attraction" world famous Stanley Park what more could you ask for! On the outside of the Sylvia one whole side of the building is completely covered by ivy. It gives the building a stately old world look and in the fall the vines turn a stunning red. As an aside another great old ivy covered building is the Fairmont Empress Hotel Victoria. Only a daytrip from Vancouver, the Empress is also in a fabulous location across the street from Victoria's Inner Harbour. Inside the Sylvia furnishing are not at all like the fancy downtown Vancouver hotels it could use an update but the rooms are large and comfortable and they do make you feel like you are at home. The hotel also gets full marks for being environmentally friendly. It has a 2 green eco- leaf rating for programs like energy efficient lighting, water conserving devices and a friendly cleaning and laundry process. There are three dining areas at the Sylvia and every seat in the house has an amazing view of English Bay. The bistro is a favorite among locals who love to come here for drinks along with light meals and appetizers and gaze out the picture windows at people walking, running, biking and roller-blading along the Stanley Park seawall regardless of what the Vancouver weather may be doing. There's also a restaurant and outdoor patio dining. Make sure you try Sunday brunch which goes from 11:00am till 2:00pm. Over the years Sylvia Hotel Vancouver has hosted rock starts and politicians and it had bragging rights as being the tallest building in Vancouver's West End. For a family vacation this hotel is a great choice. You can simply stroll across the street with the kids to the beach or into Stanley Park and cafes, restaurants, bike rentals and shopping are all only a couple of minutes away. This is one of the most popular of Vancouver neighborhoods for both locals and visitors alike.
