Steveston Village
Steveston is a little fishing village about a 40 minute drive from downtown Vancouver (pronounced "Vancoover") that was once a huge fishing and canning center.
In fact in at the turn of the century it was the busiest fishing port in the world! In the summer time hordes of people flock there to pick-up fresh seafood. You can get fish like sole, halibut, prawns, salmon, crab and lobster from the fishers right off their boats at the public dock. Just west of the docks is a little wind swept park called Garry Point and there is always a breeze coming off the Strait of Georgia which makes it a perfect spot for kite flying. The area is as flat as a pancake and that makes for an easy, comfortable walk or bike ride.
Trails leading out from the park take you non-stop for miles through meadows full of wildflowers and tall marsh grasses. One you may want to try is the Dyke Trail which passes along the "Pacific Flyway" bird migration corridor. As you go through the nesting areas you are likely to spot blue heron and bald eagles and in the spring. And in the fall.... you will hear the sounds of snow geese and trumpeter swans preparing for their journeys. After you’ve tired yourself out, you’ll no doubt be hungry and Steveston is full of some of the best places to enjoy fresh fish and chips. To get to this wonderful little fishing village from Vancouver follow Highway 99 south to Steveston Highway Exit, travel west on Steveston Highway until you reach No.1 Road, follow it south until you reach the end and you are there. ...Return often for more exciting information on many more of Vancouver's best things to do, sights to see and local attractions.
