Stanley Park Seawall

The Stanley Park seawall that goes around the outside of the park makes for a great drive, walk, jog, bike or roller blade anytime of year.

Starting right at the entrance to the park the paved walkway is 8 kilometers (5 miles) long.

It’s divided so that bikes and blades are in one lane and pedestrians are in the other.

In a car or on a bike you're forced to go around the park counter-clockwise both on the seawall and on the roadway through the park.

One of the best places to take a picture is just near the beginning of the seawall against the stunning back-drop of Coal Harbour, the Vancouver Trade and Convention Centre and the downtown core with all the Vancouver (pronounced “Vancoover”) high rise office buildings.

And something you might find unusual to see in the harbour are the floating gas stations. Yes, they actually float.

The floating gas stations is where people who have boats and other pleasure pull up just like they are at a regular gas station on land and say fill ‘er up.

In the harbour watch for float planes taking off and the sea bus coming and going from the sea bus terminal near Canada Place on its way back and forth to the terminal at Lonsdale Quay on the North Shore.

On a windy day try not to get soaked because on some parts of the seawall the water splashes onto the walkway spraying water all over the place.

When the water is really rough the waves crash against the rocks and they are all frothy and white and curly like icing on a cake. This won’t stop the bravest (or craziest of windsurfers though).

Back in the 1920’s they started building the Stanley Park seawall to stop erosion.

And... it took almost six decades to complete (yep 60 years!).

Well worth the effort I’d say because visitors and locals have made the Stanley Park seawall one of the most popular things to do.
