Sea to Sky Highway

The sea to sky highway is the twisty, windy, scenic road that starts near Horseshoe Bay and takes you up past Whistler the home of the Olympic winter games in 2010 in Vancouver (pronounced "Vancoover").

Basically, the route is a two lane undivided highway that's been built on a cliff running parallel to Howe Sound.

Without a doubt this is one of the most incredibly beautiful and scenic drives you will find anywhere.

Lions Bay Along the Sea to Sky Highway

A drive along this highway is best done slowly and with care for two reasons. One because the road has so many twists you really need to use caution and two so you can pull off the road and take in the sights of snow-capped mountain peaks, glaciers, waterfalls, alpine lakes and the occasional wildlife.

Beautiful as it is, the sea to sky highway can be treacherous and deadly.

Over the years there have been all kinds of improvements made to the road like rock scaling to stabilize the mountainside and creating numerous passing lanes along the way so you can safely pass slower vehicles.

There are times when the highway has to shut down because there has been an avalanche or landslide.

A good down pour has been known to cause creeks to over-run their banks and bridges to wash out causing flooding and bringing down tons of mud and debris.

One of the biggest tragedies happened in 1921 when a storm caused a washout that ended up with 37 being killed and 50 homes destroyed.

A recent landslide on February 4th 2007 had the sea to sky highway closed for seven hours. Luckily no one was hurt but thousands of people were left stranded on either side of the mess until it could be cleared.

As part of getting ready to host the winter Olympics, the provincial government of British Columbia is making improvements to the highway by making it wider and adding a concrete divider.
