Harrison Lake Sandcastles
Harrison Lake Sandcastles is one fabulous reason to take a day trip into the valley an hour’s drive east of Vancouver.
The first Tuesday after Labour Day in September is when they have the Harrison Lake Sandcastles competition where competitors from around the world create immense, detailed sculptures in the sand. The only materials they are allowed to use are sand and water and what they do is compress the sand and water into forms. After the sculptures are done they do two things to them one is they spray them with an environmentally friendly substance that helps them to last for about a month without drying out and crumbling. The second thing they do is insert wires into the sculptures to help stop the crows from landing on them. The sculptures are roped off with string. You can get close to them but you’re not allowed to touch them and if you do you’ll get booted out of the sand sculpture area. The sculptors enter as solos, doubles or teams. The sculptors are all former world champions or sand sculpture medal winners so sorry you don’t just get to enter.
On the other side of the road from the Harrison Lake sandcastles are beach front bed and breakfast accommodations, restaurants and hotels. You’ll find many world class hotels here and some of them are booked years in advance especially for special times of year like Valentine’s Day. There’s also lots of great shopping for arts and crafts and farm fresh produce. Harrison Lake is a picturesque resort town with many places to stop and take pictures of the mountains and the forests but don’t wander off too far the Sasquatch is known to have been sighted around Harrison Lake.
