English Bay
English Bay is right next to Stanley Park. Actually, they both run into each other along the seawall. English Bay is one of Vancouver’s (pronounced “Vancoover’s”) finest attractions and most popular beaches. It’s well known for the polar bear swim every New Years Day and as a favorite place to watch the fireworks display that happens for two weeks every summer at the end of July. People love to come here to sun-bathe and hang out with a coffee on logs that have washed up onto the shore This scenic bay is also the best and most romantic place in Vancouver for a sun-set walk on the beach because the sun sets partly on the water and partly on the mountains There are a number of things to notice at English Bay one is the palm trees that have been introduced to the area. ![]() Another... is that along the beach every so often you see that someone has carefully stacked rocks one on top of the other in an artful way. And since Vancouver and Whistler were awarded the 2010 Winter Olympic Games there is a big rock formation of the official 2010 Olympic symbol called Ilanaaq which means friend in Inuit (the Inuit are Canada’s northern indigenous people). Another common sight at this Bay is the freighters lined up in the bay. They are waiting to pick up and drop off cargo at the shipping terminal along the waterfront. The street that runs along English Bay, Beach Avenue, is full of interesting buildings. One of them is what we locals call the leaning English Bay. It was unknowingly built on perma-frost left over from the ice age and was sinking so the engineers cryogenically froze the ground around it. So if you take a picture of and it looks one of the buildings is leaning that’s because it truly is. ![]() ...Return often for more exciting information on many more of Vancouver's best things to do, sights to see and local attractions.
