Capilano River Regional Park
Capilano River Regional Park is a great place to spend at least a few hours getting in touch with nature while here in the Vancouver (pronounced "Vancoover") area. It's like Stanley Park and the Vancouver Aquariumalong with prime hiking paths and biking trails all rolled into one. There are many things to see and explore at the park including the Cleveland Dam and the Capilano Salmon Fish Hatchery.
The Cleveland Dam located in the park controls the flow of the Capilano River and it is the main source of the areas drinking water. The Salmon Hatchery is an artificial spawning ground for salmon that's returning from the Pacific. The best time to see the salmon is between July and November. There is free admission to the salmon hatchery and you can watch the fry through glass walls around the tanks. The park is open all year round and is complete with amenities that include tables and washroom facilities that are conveniently located near the river. There are guided tours throughout the park. This is a popular spot for field trips by school children because there are educational displays that tell about the life cycle of fish in the area. There are many nature walks and biking trails throughout the park but this is park is also known as an ideal location for experienced kayaking and canoeing. For one of the best views take a walk along the top of the dam and you will see the twin peaks of the Lions (also called the twin sisters) which are a popular place to hike and it's also where the Lions Gate Bridge gets it's name. Take a look around in that area you may find a number of the views that remind you of somewhere it’s probably because they filmed a lot of TV shows and feature films in this area. Capilano River Regional Park is a nice local walk rain or shine it's not strenuous and it's one of the best free things to do in Vancouver. ...Return often for more exciting information on many more of Vancouver's best things to do, sights to see and local attractions.
