Canucks Hockey, a Treasured Vancouver Sporting Event

For the people of Vancouver Canucks hockey is like a borderline alternative cult religion of some kind.

Canucks Hockey at GM Place

Anyone observing Vancouver hockey fans can plainly see rooting for the Canucks is like an addiction that you can't quite leave behind.

It really is a wonder there aren't more people in the city with sore knees from constantly jumping on and off the Canucks wagon.

Mostly though people in Vancouver even if they are not Canucks fans the rest of the year when the team makes it to the playoffs (which doesn't happen near often enough) get a serious case of Canucks fever.

It's kind of like that children's nursery rhyme about the little girl with the curl in her forehead…when the team is doing good they are very very good and when they are bad they are horrid.

Hockey games are at General Motors Place which is also called GM Place or you might hear it called by its nickname "the garage" and for the Vancouver 2010 Olympics it was temporarily called Canada Hockey Place.

GM Place is next to BC Place which is the home of BC Lions (CFL Football Team).

Both of these sporting venues are located conveniently close to downtown Vancouver hotels, downtown restaurants and public transit including skytrain and the seabus.

You could easily leave your hotel in the morning and visit some sight-seeing attractions throughout the day like Gastown and Chinatown.

Make your way to one of the many restaurants along Robson Street before heading off to the game.

Usually when there's a game on traffic into the downtown tends to get heavy early.

Thousands of people stream in from all over the lower mainland for the game and to take advantage of Canucks hockey game restaurant and hotel packages.

The streets are littered with people wearing hockey jerseys and faces paint in the team colors and generally in a pretty great mood.

GM Place can seat over 18-thousand fanatical fans during a hockey game and there's nothing quite like going to a sold out Canucks hockey game. There is just so much energy and excitement as the crowd oohs and ahhs in unison.

When the Canucks make it to the post season the excitement jumps to a whole other level. It's all anyone talks about and it's all the talk you hear on the radio.

You can always tell who the hard core hockey fans are because they are the ones flying hockey towels usually two towels one on the drivers' side car window and one on the passenger side.

Overall Canucks hockey is a very important and treasured part of the culture of the city. There has been professional hockey in Vancouver since 1911 though they haven't always been called Canucks.

Interesting Canucks Hockey Facts

  • Canuck is a slang term for Canadian
  • The Canucks have had 13 different logo and jersey changes over the years
  • Vancouver Canucks hockey fans have been voted by Spike TV as being the 5th most annoying all of sports fans and the most irritating in the National Hockey League

Thankfully for rabid Vancouver hockey fans when the Canucks are having a bad run of it there's always the Vancouver Giants our junior hockey team who are consistently in the top of their division.

At less than have the price of a single game Canucks tickets the Giants are twice the bargain.

However if you've just arrived in town and discovered it's Canucks game day check with ticketmaster because there may be last minute tickets released.
