British Columbia Weather
When trying to describe British Columbia weather, it’s impossible to generalize the entire province. The weather is as diverse as British Columbia herself. From the sea-level cities of Vancouver and Victoria to the mountains of northern BC, there are countless microclimates that, by themselves, vary greatly throughout the year. To talk about them as a whole is pretty much impossible. Therefore, when talking about British Columbia weather, it’s easiest to take a look at the three most popular regions. Vancouver and Lower Mainland
Vancouver is, of course, the most visited city in British Columbia. It has been rated one of the top cities to live and visit, with good reason. There are countless things to do in Vancouver; including shopping, museums, enjoying the wide range of eclectic dining, and any number of outdoor activities. Vancouver’s Stanley Park is one of the top parks in all of North America, with everything from beaches and Canada’s largest aquarium to the scenic seawall and the famous BC totem poles. Vancouver weather is, overall, quite moderate; with temperatures averaging 75 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer and lows in the winter only dipping to the mid-thirties in the winter. While the winter can see a fair amount of rain, it is not nearly as rainy as many people might think. Of course, you can take a day trip from Vancouver and visit the Gulf Islands; where you can experience some of the best whale watching in the world. The weather here has been described as similar to the weather in the Mediterranean; warm and dry in the summer, and “wet and mild” in the winter. On the other hand, one of the most famous ski areas in all of Canada, Whistler Blackcomb, is only an hour and a half outside the City of Vancouver. But thanks to its dramatic change in elevation, this area receives an average of 33 feet of snowfall per year! The BC RockiesBut British Columbia weather changes drastically as you head north. The region known as the BC Rockies in Northern BC is growing in popularity and tourism. This area of BC has colder winters, due to its latitude, and annual snowfall can average around 23 feet. Summers are short, although mid-day temperatures can reach into the 70s. Okanagan Valley
The area known as Thompson Okanagan, or the Okanagan Valley, feels as if you are in an entirely different country. This is where the popular town of Kelowna is located, along the famous Okanagan Lake. Temperatures in the summer here can easily reach 85 degrees, and winters are mild with little snow and an average of 40 inches of rain per year. The climate is often compared to the wine regions of France, and therefore there are numerous wineries in this region thanks to the optimum climate for growing grapes. When researching your trip to BC, it’s best to not try to understand British Columbia weather as a whole, but divide it into the regions you will be visiting and what time of year. This way you can have more accurate expectations and be prepared for your trip of a lifetime to beautiful BC.
