Bowen Island

Bowen Island makes a great little day trip away from Vancouver (pronounced "Vancoover"). It's a short 20 minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay though it feels like a world away.

This quaint little island is a popular and trendy home for writers, artists and others who prefer a relaxed country living lifestyle on the Island away from the hustle and bustle of city life. And...Vancouver is less than an hour away. Kind of like country living in the city!

Once you get off the ferry and onto the Island you’ll see a restored building called the Union Steamship Company store. There’s an information center there where you can get a map and guide book with places to eat, things to do, and where you can stay.

A good place to head first is Artisan Square. It’s not very far from the ferry even if you’re walking.

The local artists living on Bowen Island sell their arts and crafts there so you can pick up something really unique at one of the galleries or artist studios. There also a local restaurant that makes delicious home-made soup.

Once you’ve finished looking around Bowen Island there’s all the usual kinds of west coast activities you can do like boating, sea kayaking, bird-watching, biking or walking.

One walk that I really enjoy is at the labyrinth. The labyrinth is basically a maze but this one is made of stones placed on the ground in a pattern that gets increasing smaller until this you reach the centre… then you walk your way out of it again. It’s supposed to be great for mediation (there is a small box at the gate where you can make a donation to help upkeep the grounds).

Remember though unless you ‘re planning to stay over night on Bowen Island the last ferry back to Horseshoe Bay and the mainland leaves just after 10:00 at night.
