BC Place Stadium
Against the Vancouver skyline BC Place Stadium stood out like one large cotton pillow or maybe a fluffy marshmallow.
The stadium is getting a face-lift. The old air-supported roof is being replaced with a new retracable roof and the stadium is also getting new lighting, a new sound system, new scoreboards and new artificial turf. BC Place Stadium has played host to a number of large events. Most recently the stadium hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympic and in the past there have been concerts like Sting, David Bowie, Madonna and the Rolling Stones. BC Place has also had a lot of famous guests including Pope John Paul II, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Besides all the pomp and pageantry there's car and lifestyle trade shows and BC Place stadium is also home to the BC Lions who are our city's CFL (Canadian Football League) team. (For those who are not from North America, football here means "American Football" and not soccer.) At the main entrance to BC Place Stadium is a huge statue of Terry Fox the one legged runner who ran all the way across Canada to raise money for cancer research.
Even though he’s passed away millions of people run each year in their local towns to raise money for cancer research. The statue is a common place to meet up with friends before going to a Vancouver event. All the skytrain lines stop here and so do the False Creek Ferries and Aquabus and since the stadium is right downtown close to all the major hotels in Vancouver, it’s walking distance for everyone. BC Place Stadium is also the finish line for the Vancouver Sun Run every April and the Vancouver Marathon every May.
