BC Place Stadium Roof
The air-supported BC Place Stadium roof is built to last 25 years but on Friday January 5th 2007 the air was let out on purpose so the roof wouldn’t cave in.
The roof began to sag after a windstorm and heavy, wet snow made a tear in it. BC Place stadium roof is inspected every year to make sure it remains in excellent condition and this is the first time the roof had to be deflated like this. The land mark roof which normally looks like a big fluffy marshmallow floating in the sky was first inflated in 1983. The roof is made up of two layers of fabric with a space in between and fans powered by electricity keep the roof up. Vehicles entering the stadium to set up for events have to go through an air-lock and often when you first come into the stadium you may find that your ears pop because of the air pressure. When it snows hot air is also pumped between the layers of the roof to melt the snow. In 2010 BC Place will host the Opening Ceremonies of the Winter Olympic Games. This will be the first time the opening ceremonies will be held inside for the Olympic games. BC Place is also home to the B.C. Lions football team and every year hundreds of trade shows, concerts and other events are held there. ...Return often for more exciting information on many more of Vancouver's best things to do, sights to see and local attractions.
