BC Place Stadium Roof
BC Place Stadium roof is under construction. The old landmark roof which normally looked like a big fluffy marshmallow floating in the sky was first inflated in 1983 but it's being replaced with a retractable roof.
The air-supported BC Place Stadium roof was built to last 25 years but on Friday January 5th 2007 the air had to be let out on purpose so the roof wouldn’t cave in. The roof began to sag after a windstorm and heavy, wet snow made a tear in it. The opening and closing ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics were some of the last big events under the stadium roof before it got deflated. Other events under the dome have included rock concerts like David Bowie, U2, The Rolling Stones, Madonna and the Jacksons. The stadium has also hosted famous people like Pope John Paul II, Queen Elizabeth II, and Prince Charles and Princess Diana. As well as the hundreds of trade shows and other events that are held at BC Place every year, the stadium is also the home of our BC Lions football team. The new retractable roof is costing $458 million dollars. The newly renovated stadium is scheduled to re-open by the summer of 2011 in time to host the Grey Cup football championship in November.
