What you will discover on a drive around Victoria is that old meet new.

There are many charming neighbourhoods full of restored homes and heritage buildings which have been turned into bed and breakfasts, guest houses and apartments.

The old buildings help keep the city with a small town old fashioned feeling that's a bit like stepping back in time.

One thing that stands out is the number of places of worship with grand architecture and beautiful stained glass that have been preserved.

I learned from an obviously proud local who stopped to provide the information without having been asked that all the building materials for this particular church Christ Church Cathedral were brought over brick by brick from England.

The church is magnificent from the outside and it would have been wonderful to go inside but at the time there was a church service going on.

Another stop on your sight-seeing tour of Victoria is Beacon Hill Park. Pack a lunch and head to the park.

A popular thing to do at Beacon Park is kite flying because you can get a good breeze off the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

The park is a mix of rugged natural windswept shore complete with blue heron and other water fowl, fields of wildflowers, manicured gardens and walking trails.

After spending a few hours driving around and enjoying the quaint beauty of Victoria it will be time to head back and catch the ferry. Time your sailing right and you will enjoy an amazing sunset from your day trip and back to Vancouver.
