Vancouver's Chinatown
Vancouver's Chinatown (pronounced "Vancoover") is a great place to spend an afternoon. This is the second largest Chinatown in all of North America.
As you stroll around in this very interesting and unique area you will be amazed at all the hundreds of interesting shops that are filled with an astonishing variety of sea-food, produce, teas, inexpensive house-wares, crafts and traditional Chinese medicines. There’s usually Chinese music coming out from speakers onto the street as you walk along and the smells from all the restaurants are mouth watering. I recommend you stop and try a tasty meal. The food is usually inexpensive and very satisfying.
I like to stop by this one place called “Kent’s” and pick up some rice or chow mein with two other dishes on top like vegetables and meat. It’s a whopping size and it’s less than $5.00(Canadian). Another thing to try if you’ve never tried it before is “dim sum” which is a traditional style of Chinese food served in small portions. It’s really delicious and it’s a great way to try little bits of different things not to mention the great amusement at daring your companions to try strange looking things. A fun time to visit popular area is on weekend summer nights.
Friday, Saturday and Sunday Vancouver Chinatown become an Asian style night marketplace. Tables and stalls are set up and filled with bargain priced merchandise and bartering is what it's all about. While you’re in Chinatown don’t forget to stop by the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Gardens. The gardens are hidden behind white walls. It's the first classical Chinese garden outside of China and it was built in the traditional way without nails or any electrical tools. Traditionally, gardens like this were places for scholars to live and work and it’s a great spot to stop and catch your breath. To make your trip here even more fun learn some Mandarin phrases before you go.
