2010 Olympic Games Know Before You Go

This February, the 2010 Olympic Games will be held in the beautiful city of Vancouver, British Columbia and the nearby famous town of Whistler.

The 2010 Olympic Games will take place from February 12 to February 28, 2010. During this time, the entire world will turn its attention to Vancouver and its surrounding areas.

Vancouver is dressed up and ready to host this historic event, and in typical friendly Canadian fashion, excited to welcome international guests.

If you do not yet have tickets to the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, or you have tickets but have not yet booked your accommodations, it’s not too late; but it would be wise to act soon before everything is sold out!

Here are a few important things to “know before you go:”

Hotels in Vancouver BC

There are a number of downtown Vancouver hotels with rooms still available. Of course, room rates will be at a premium but the higher cost of a room often offsets the hassle of getting around.

Additionally, there are plenty of Vancouver accommodations on the outskirts of the city as well; and you can often find lower rates.

The Vancouver transit system is so well designed that you can get just about anywhere in the city by bus, seabus, or train.

Canada Line Vancouver Transit

Of course crowds will be significant and so the city is encouraging spectators to take public transit.

Many hotels offer Vancouver Olympics packages which offer discounts when you buy tickets to the 2010 Olympic Games along with your accommodations and even a rental car.

Keep in mind that spectator parking is not allowed at any of the venues and so a car will not be necessary unless you plan on driving around to see other parts of British Columbia during your stay.

Vancouver BC Weather

The weather in Vancouver, even in the winter, is relatively mild compared to many other destinations that have hosted winter games.

This sea-level town sees more rain than snow; so bring your umbrella, ponchos, and other rain gear along with your cold-weather clothing.

However, if you plan on attending any games at nearby Whistler, be prepared for winter!

Whistler Ski Resort co-host of the 2010 Olympic Games

While Whistler is only a couple of hours outside the city, the change in elevation helps Whistler to get an average of 33 feet of snowfall per year.

And, if you’d like to partake in your own “winter games,” the Whistler Blackcomb ski mountain will remain open for skiers and snowboarders during the 2010 Olympic Games.

Over 90% of the terrain will be open and accessible, so bring your gear to take full advantage of your time in BC.

Vancouver Events

Of course, Vancouver is a city that enjoys events year-round; and cultural events are an important part of the Olympic Games.

The Vancouver Cultural Olympiad, held from January 22 until March 21, will feature over 600 ticketed and free events at over 60 locations throughout Vancouver.

Events will include music concerts, theatrical plays, comedians, dancing, and even circus acts.

It’s not often that the Olympic Games are so close to home; take advantage of its close proximity and be a party of history! Book your 2010 Olympic Games vacation today!
